Artist Statement
I want my work to have the look of science (at least pseudo-science), to have the feel of the spiritual, and to be first and foremost art. I use a versatile vocabulary of images that I keep not only in my head but physically in my studio, not as muses, but as raw material. Monotypes, photographs, found objects, photocopy transfers, digital prints of images or objects that I scanned and manipulated or original work created on the computer*, and sketches find their way into the work. I often use multiple monotypes, in parts or whole, to make one collage.
I begin working in an obsessively organized, spotlessly white studio. At the end of a working session only chaos remains; and, if I was successful, one or more works on paper are on the wall. A fascination with science and how thing work, especially things I don’t understand, fuels my desire to create these images; however, a mistrust, a skepticism, and perhaps a primitive fear of what is beyond my comprehension seeps into the work and colors it dark and brooding. The result is satisfying if the work evokes my curiosity (What is it? Where did THAT come from?), a little awe (How did I do that? What does it mean?), and a lot of wonder. |
