Artist Statement
My images are very process-oriented because I love to explore new and different
materials. At the same time, curiosity drives me to find out how a specific
technique will influence a design. After 30 years of printmaking using
exclusively dark monochromatic inks, the world of color is the foiundation for
new works.
With each image, I challenge myself to combine deeply etched copper plates,
highly textured collagraphs and chine collé in ways so that the different
elements complement each other. My use of chine collé and collage stems from a
life-long love affair with paper and papermaking. I often use hand-made
patterned, marbled or richly fibered oriental papers either as a foundation or
as the finishing touch for my multi-plate prints. Layers of monotype inks can be
added to lend volume to the flat planes of patterned plates.
The resulting designs combine organic textures with geometric shapes. Although
my images are quite layered they remain surprisingly subtle. Each image is
unique as my plates are inked up in various colors and combine differently every
time I print them. I find it satisfying not only to create art in this playful
manner, but also to combine my life-long interests of printmaking and
papermaking.
