Artist Statement
Now counted in the dwindling hundreds, once thousands of wooden or tin-clad grain elevators were erected after 1900 across the vastness of Canada and America. They were essential to the economic survival of farmers and to the continent’s general prosperity. The elevators stood out so vividly they were commonly called prairie skyscrapers. Many can still be seen on the horizon in remote regions of places like Montana, Saskatchewan, North Dakota and Oklahoma.
Located on rail spurs these elderly wrecks are now often regarded as safety hazards by village fathers or as nostalgic reminders of a worthy past by history buffs. For the most part they are ignored by those who pass them daily and are noted only when they finally collapse or burn - by mistake or intention.
There is a visual poetry in early industrial and agricultural architecture which tells about our past, of families and their struggles, of success and tragedy. Rich stories are also suggested by the other derelicts I have printed ranging from rotting ships’ piers off Manhattan Island and the peeling cast iron stairs of a once vital Eastern train station . The photographic imagery is of two types. One is in the Gumoil method. Rubbed-in oils over a gum matrix provided the pigmentation and then, with careful bleach etching, polychromes were made. Each image is unique. The other images are made by the gravure process and printed in limited editions from hand-inked steel plates passed through an etching press. |
