Artist Statement

As I was growing up in West Texas, my Father and I took evening walks. We

admired sunsets with their fantastic cloud formations and vivid colors. These

skyscapes inspired me to study the contrast of light and shadow in house

fronts, abandoned buildings, interiors and other subjects. Consequently, I love

to print images that reflect the immediacy of a moment - a moment that

captures light and shadow. Light and shadow enhance my subjects creating

different moods that transcend the ordinary. These elements along with color

and perspective encourage the viewer to look again at the familiar.

Printmaking is a process by which I am able, at last, to capture in a spontaneous

way these observed moments. I begin with a thumb nail sketch in pencil which

has just enough detail to give me form for content. Putting color on the plate and

having a composed scene is enough; the finished plate, the paper and the press

all work together to complete the creative impulse. Other times, I embellish by

applying layers of color and texture, all blending to work together until the finished

image emerges. Preparing the image in this manner makes for a more deliberate

           and studied painting.

Focusing our attention on ordinary scenes in this way may remind the viewers of

a time past: inviting them to use the scene to create their own story. The power

of the painting is thereby its effect on the viewer. Through the use of either method,

spontaneous or deliberate, I strive to make scenes meaningful for each viewer. It is

my hope to evoke a memory that was, and still is special.
