Artist Statement

My current work plays with the images that swim in memory about a particular time or place or event. Most of the pieces are based on a specific geography, time, and event in my own mind. The work uses disjointed, fractured and layered images evocative of dream and memory.

This work was created in conjunction with the writing of poetry.  Much of my poetry starts with a visual image, which I jot down in the form of a poem, and then return to later to flesh out as a work of art.  Other times, I develop the work of art right away, and then return later to write the words that belong with it.

I have returned to printmaking for two reasons.  One, as a pragmatic method of creating a book of art and poetry; and two, because printmaking, especially intaglio, has a long rich history of bridging the gap between the visual and the written word.  It is well suited to the layering of images and sometimes words, which I am currently exploring in my artwork.
